Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson (JBER) is the result of the merger of the USAF Elemdorf Air Force Base and the Army’s Fort Richardson in Anchorage, Alaska.


Its mission is to support and defend U.S. interests in the Asia Pacific region and around the world by providing units who are ready for worldwide air power projection and a base that is capable of meeting PACOM’s theater staging requirements due to its unique far northern position allowing for over the pole access to Europe and Asia.

Home to the Alaskan NORAD Region, JBER units comprise of forces from the USAF, US Army, and Canadian Air Force that continually monitor the Northwestern approaches to the Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ) through remote radar stations dotting the Alaska coast, and can field the
E-3 AWACS Sentry and F-22 Raptors to intercept through the JBER based Eleventh Air Force, 673th Air Base Wing, the 3rd Wing, and the 176th Wing, operating C-17 Globemasters, C-130 Hercules, and KC-135 Tankers.
